- Maurepas, Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux, count de
(1701-1781)
political figure
Born in Versailles, Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux, count de Maurepas, the grandson of the royal comptroller general louis phélypeaux, count de pontchar-train, succeeded his father as minister of the Royal Household, then went into the navy. He improved the city of Paris, encouraged scientific studies (see pierre de maupertuis, jussieu family), and reformed the naval administration. But he was disgraced for having been suspected of writing an epigram against Mme de pompadour, the mistress of King louis XV (1749). Recalled in 1779 by King louis XVI, Maurepas surrounded himself with capable individuals (robert turgot, chrétien de malesherbes, charles de vergennes), but he could not defend himself against court intrigues. His Mémoires have been published.
